A strong plea to retain the publication of defendants’ ■ names in criminal court cases i has been made by an Auckland doctor. A youth working as a partitime gardener at her home; (was arrested and charged' iwith growing marijuana. ; “The first we knew of it I was when we saw his name !in the ‘Auckland Star.’ The boy had been sentenced to three years in gaol. ! “We arranged an appeal I for him and appeared as ; character witnesses — the !boy had no idea that wei !would appear on his behalf.] "On appeal, his sentence! jwas reduced to six months. j i “He was not a bad lad —j he was just experimenting! — but three years in gaol' and he would have been a] I criminal. And we would! have known nothing about it; i but for that story in the! paper,” she said.
