LIBYAN DENIAL
6 No seizure in Chad’ CN.Z P A Reuter — Copyright) TRIPOLI, September 9 Libya has denied a report in the London "Sunday Times” alleging that the country has annexed part of northern Chad to obtain uranium it believes to be there. A.R.N.A.. the official Libyan news agency, quotes a Foreign Ministry spokes, man as describing the report as "totally baseless, a mere fabrication, and a malicious attempt to sow discord and hatred among the brotherly Arab States.”
A.R.N.A. also quotes the spokesman as saying: “Relations between our two neighbouring States are very strong, cordial, and brotherly.”
The "Sunday Times” published a map showing the annexed area slicing as much as 60 miles from Chad territory along the entire 600-mile border, thereby eliminating the section of Chad jutting into Libya.
Annexation of the barren Sahara Desert area was first reported two weeks ago in the Tripoli newspaper “Al Fatih,” but went unnoticed outside as it was not broadcast on Libyan radio, the ‘'Sunday Times” said.
The article by Peter Kellner quoted semi-official Libyan sources saying the annexation was intended to restore Libya’s historical borders, which the French and British moved north 25 years ago when they were the dominant colonial powers in the area.
