Lumber Box sets pace
“He sure can go some,” said George Shand after he had driven the Oamaruowned and trained Lumber Box to an all-the-way win in the New Brighton Stakes on Saturday night.
Lumber Box set a torrid pace, recording 2:34 for the 2000 m, not that far outside Noodlum’s record for a three-year-old of 2:32.4. Lumber Box paced his last 1600 m in 2:1.6, with the last 800 m in 60.8, and the final 400 m in 31.
“I’ve got nothing definite planned for him, but will probably ease him up for a few weeks how,” said his owner-trainer, Frank Oliver. “It was the first time he had been on the front line in a race,” he said. “He’s a great beginner, but has usually been checked by breaking horses. He’s not in the Derby and I’ve not given any thought to making a late entry payment for him. I’ll just wait and see how he goes later on.” Lumber Box, tracked by Stanley Rio, drew right away from his rivals, Tarport Toby and Smokey Lopez giving him a start of eight to 10 lengths from the 600 m. Lumber Box beat Stanley Rio by three lengths, with Tarport Toby getting up for third half a neck away, a nose in front of Smokey Lopez, which did remarkably well to finish so close after starting from 20m,
