Southern Comfort’s win
Southern Comfort, a disappointment at the National meeting, returned to his best when he finished strongly to win the Em Smith Trotting Handicap at Addington on Saturday night. He settled well back in a strung out field and was still several lengths from the leader, Brenda Bell, at the 600 m. However, he improved quickly from the 300 m, coming three wide into the straight and continuing a strong run to cut back Brenda Bell close to the line, with Lord Rodney third. Brenda Bell, a firm favourite, tried to lead for the last 2000 m and had a length and three-quarters to spare from Lord Rodney, which hung on gamely after racing in the open. Waitaki Gamble finished well for fourth, with Ann's Globe and Tough Going fifth and sixth respectively, after having every chance. MADE PACE Master Robert, which trailed, just got up on the inside to shade Wheatson, which had made most of the pace, in the Travis Handicap for C 4 C 5 pacers. Junior Armbro ran on gamely for third after being three wide for the last round, and five-year-old Golden Moose, a good two and three-year-old went an encouraging race for fifth, in his first start since January. Nigel Craig led for the last 1600 m for a convincing win in the Introductory Handicap, with Another Day
fighting on well for second after being left in the open. Atarau Lass ran on for hird with Portage, Proper, No Courting and Del Renown close up next. STRONG FINISH Prince Twinkle finished solidly from a handy position on the outer to catch the favourite, There And Back just short of the line in the Oxford Handicap.
There And Back tried to lead for the last 1200 m and held on well for his second placing, a length and a quarter clear of Dragon’s Dream, which finished strongly, as
did the fourth placed Rostriever Child.
Staveley, driven by Robbie Behms, ran away from his opposition in the Cambridge Handicap to win by five lengths from the favourite, Fair Chance, driven by Peter Jones with Matai Mist finishing fast for third, ahead of Tinwald and Laskee.
The hot favourite, Gay Stroller, was untroubled to win the Raceway Handicap after leading for the last 1500 m from Rosewood Light and Bluegum Surprise, both of which were handy on the inner.
