Hornby postal facilities
Sir, —The Post Office has advised that it is shifting the post box from beside the Hornby Mall on the north side of the Main South Road to the south side so its van driver does not have to make a U-turn. Respectfully, there is already the Post Office on the south side of the main road at Hornby, and the increased danger, to children and the public generally by forcing them to cross this extremely busy road is not warranted. Similarly, this post box now serves people coming into Hornby from the country where postal facilities are relatively sparse, but the opposite side of the road serves those leaving the city where there is plenty of opportuntiy to post letters. In fact, the post office is only 300 yards away. Accordingly, I trust the Post Office will review its decision and recognise postal facilities are for the convenience and safety of the public. Also, perhaps consideration could be given to clearing it more than once a day.-—Yours, etc. DAVID H. RANKIN. August 25, 1975. * [The Christchurch Chief Postmaster (Mr J. C. Smith) replies: “The suggestion from your correspondent has been investigated and, although the box is in a commercial area and removed from the residential area, the route taken on this particular clearance has been altered and the traffic hazard previously experienced by drivers has been eliminated. The box will therefore' remain in its present position and continue to be cleared daily. The interest taken by your correspondent is appreciated.”]
