Labour ready for hustings

The Labour Party will, fire its first volley of the' General Election campaign this Saturday with advertising in all the main daily newspapers. The general secretary of the Labour Party (Mr j. F.i Wybrow) confirmed from| Wellington that on Saturday! the party would begin its' campaign. As well as what Mr Wybrow called the “quiet advertisement,” the party’s head office will release the first of! a series of political pamph-, lets, and the Prime Minister! (Mr Rowling) will address a! meeting of the Maori policy! committee. Mr Wybrow said the party j would also make some policy! announcements soon.

“The campaign will be coordinated through advertising, with one or two newer approaches,” he said. The approaches would become obvious as the campaign progressed, “but from now on you will see us in the field.’’ The late start in the national campaign has been criticised by some party members, but Mr Wybrow said it might be to the advantage of the party. The National Party, which began campaigning much earlier, might not be able to sustain the pace when the race to the polls began in earnest, he said. Most of the candidates,' especially those in marginal, seats, were already campaigning.

. In the meantime, speculaI tion on the date of the General Election continues. Mr Rowling said in Parliament yesterday that the date had already been decided upon. However, he declined; the invitation of the Leader! of the Opposition (Mr Mui-: doon) to announce it. The date of the General Election was normally announced in mid-September, and September 22 had been a popular date for the; announcement in the past,! said Mr Rowling. FOOTNOTE.— HaIIs in the Hamilton West electorate: have been booked as polling: places—for Saturday, November 29 —reports the Press Association.
