N.Z. untroubled in win
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. New Zealand was untroubled to beat Singapore 67-17 in the world netball championships at the Windmill Road courts, Auckland, yesterday. The tight and tall defence of the New Zealanders again made scoring by the opposition difficult. Maxine Blomquis, who formed the defensive trio with Yvonne Willering and Marilyn Munro, switched to goal-shoot after Anne Taylor went down on her ankle and retired.
Lynn Gunson was the replacement and took part in her sixth sucessive game.
Shirley Langrope played an energetic game in the centre while Mrs Taylor and Frances Granger both scored well. The versatility of the New Zealand girls will be the deciding factor when they meet the tough Trinidad team today. Singapore was reduced to attempting goals from the edge of the circle and they had neither the height nor the accuracy for this. i Too many misdirected passes led to Wales losing 28-56 to England.
Wales, too, was forced to) shoot from the edge of the circle, and the Welsh girls) could not ’cope with the speed of the England quartet of Pat Watson, Judi Heath, Lynn McDonald and Linda Allison. The ball seemed to be doing the work for the Australians in their 62-16 defeat of Jamaica, and this was because of the very good passing by Gail Dorrinton, Margaret Caldow, and Sharon Hayes, aided by good defence clearance. The Jamaicans were given little chance to settle down. FIRST WIN By the mere margin of two points, Scotland gained its first win of the tournament, 49-47, against Fiji. It was a close game throughout, and the Scotland side really clicked as a team, with each player putting in effective efforts. Fiji persisted in the long, high-passing game to their taller goal-shooters but found the Scots intercepting often.
The chances of the Papuans to win their first match of the tournament dwindle as each day passes. Yesterday they lost, 17-82 to Trinidad and Tobago. It was an easy game for the girls from Trinidad and Tobago. The faults that Papua New Guinea have displayed right through the tournament — lack of drive and knowledge of the rules — plagued them again. Results:— England 56 (J. Heath 35, P. Watson 21), Wales 28 (C. Lewis 22, L. Owene 6). New Zealand 64 (F. Granger 37. A. Taylor 23, M. Blomquist 4),
