WELLINGTON
The Government has every confidence that the minimum of $250,000 required to launch the Norman Kirk Memorial Fund will be in sight on the anniversary of Mr Kirk’s death next Sunday.
Public subscriptions have produced more than $lOO,OOO already, with some sums promised but not yet received. There are some contributions by other countries, such as Fiji, which have not yet arrived. The Government has approved a dollar-for-dollar grant of up to $125,000 for the fund Announcing the Government’s contribution, the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) recalled that the Winston Churchin Memorial Appeal was launched with a $lOO,OOO grant bv the Government, and that the Coates. Massey. Forbes. Savage and Fraser memorials received grants from the Government.
When the appeal was launched, the trustees indicated that the Kirk memorial would not be of stone.
but would be a living memorial to assist people within New Zealand, and its South Pacific neighbours, who did not have the opportunity to reach their full potential. This was in keeping with the deeply-felt humanitarian principles of the late Norman i Kirk. “I am pleased that this I grant will make it possible for more people who lack; opportunity, to further their education, study or training! so that they may better their i own lives, and have the i chance to play a more meaningful part in community development.” Mr Faulkner, said. , "Applications for grants | will be called for shortly. and‘ the first awards are expected! to be made early in 1976.” he said.
