Boote off to Europe
John Boote, the 20-year-old Christchurch motor-cycle racer, is to make his European debut in the Dutch round of the world Formula 750 championship at Assen on September 6 and 7. In the Formula 750 race at Assen, Boote will face the toughest opposition of his career. Among his rivals ■will be the leader of the world series, Barry Sheene (Britain), a Suzuki works rider, and the very talented young Venezuelan, Johnny Cecotto, who rides for Yamaha. The Kawasaki factory will be represented by Barry Ditchbum (Britain).
' Soccer. — Bobby Charlton, former England and Manchester United captain, resigned as manager of Preston North End after a dispute with the club’s directors. He quit after the directors proceeded without him on negotiations for the transfer of John Bird, the Preston centre back.
Squash.—The New Zealand women’s team beat Transvaal 4-0 in Johannesburg. Robyn Davis beat Beryl Boon 7-9, 9-5. 8- 9-5, 10-8. Julie Hawkes beat Jean Granger 4-9, 9-4, 2-9. 9-1, 9- Rosemarie Garvie beat Dawn Kaizer 9-4, 9-3, 9-3; Pam Buckingham beat Denise Holton, 9-5, 9-3, 8-10, 9-5.
