Joint venture on N.Z. lamb

New Zealand and French meat producer organisations will establish a joint venture to control the phasing and distribution of lamb from New Zealand under the existing French import quota arrangements, the Meat Board announced.

The board and the French Sheep Farmers’ Federation (F.N.0.) had been discussing the import of New Zealand lamb into France and, in particular, ensuring that the imports complemented local supplies in meeting the requirements of the market, said the chairman of the board (Mr C. Hilgendorf). Both French and NewZealand meat producers had an interest in ensuring that lamb on sale in France was evenly distributed and availtable to the consumer I throughout the year. The producers of both countries I were also concerned to re-

ceive a market price high enough to ensure an adequate return and a reasonable standard of living. “The French Government’s quota restrictions severly limit New Zealand’s ability to export to France but, even if we are supplying a' very modest share of thej French lamb market, it is inj our interest to see that this is done as effectively as : possible,” he said. “Our aim, along with our French colleagues, is to! achieve a level of practical co-operation which will. make this possible.” |
