Stands ‘best answer’

While traffic inspectors have power to remove bicycles causing an obstruction, the Ministry of Transport does not think this is a practical solution to problems caused by bicycles left at random round shopping centres. This information was given to the Waimairi County Council at its meeting on Thursday night in reply to a query as to what could be done to improve the position.

The Ministry said that children should be told at school instruction sessions that it was illegal to leave bicycles on footpaths and if, in addition, warnings were given by inspectors, that should to a large extent solve the problem. The Ministry was not prepared to remove bicycles, but once suitable stands had been installed, it would enforce their use. The council left it to riding members to decide where (stands are necessary, and to ! arrange for their installation.
