Would Marx choose N.Z.?
Sir, — It is pertinent to ask what qualifications the Rev. R. Oppenheim has for presuming to speak for Karl Marx, or for asserting that “New Zealand society was closer to that visualised by Marx than the Soviet Union of the 19705.” (“The Press,” August 8). Significantly, Mr Oppenheim’s assertion is so vague and nebulous that one cannot establish definitely exactly what he does say. He cannot deny that the Soviet Union is a socialist State, as “visualised by Marx,” achieved, as Marx laid down, by the proletariat’s'overthrowing the capitalist class. New Zealand, equally undeniably, is a capitalist society. With the best will in the world it is impossible to reconcile these hard, incontrovertible facts with the Rev. Oppenheim’s assertions. — Yours, etc, M.C.H. August 9, 1975.
