Salvage of windthrown timber

Sir, — While the possibility of large log exports appears uncertain, the question of lack of adequate stockpiling space at Lyttelton was mentioned as an obstacle. I do not know what effect long immersion in saltwater has on logs; perhaps their usable life would be prolonged when compared with normal dry stockpiling. If it is not detrimental, could not some harbour area be made availabe? Retaining booms as used overseas appear simple and cheap to construct. If feasible, this

could offer longer storage life with the alternative of local use if no overseas market was offering. — Yours, etc., V. H. C. PICTON. August 8, 1975.
