Before Canterbury Bentonite, Ltd extends its bent-; onite quarry near Hororata.i the company will have to; make a change of use appli-i cation to the Malvern 1 County Council. This, it was explained at al meeting of the council yesterday, will enable condi-l tions to be imposed on the| company to ensure that thei bentonite does not get into' streams and pollute them., and to give more control on the effects of a planned ex-j tension of the workings. Councillors said that! minor pollution had already! been caused through the yellow bentonite being washed' by heavy rain into creeks, and thence to the Hororata; River This could affect! domestic water supplies. The North Canterbury 7; Catchment Board wrote to' the council, saying that it I had received a complaint, that the workings were pol-l luting a stream near Horo-, rata The board a?ked the council if it had given the I company approval for its I operations as required by the Town and Country Planning Act.
