Proposal on clinics (N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. A British Parliamentary . committee has urged restrictions on the country's abortion clinics, which attract nearly 60,000 foreign women j a year to Britain. The move is a reaction against the excesses of Britain’s 1967 Abortion Act, which legalised abortion on medical and social grounds in an effort to stamp out the j scourge of back-street operI ators.
Bur the 1967 legislation, passed in a wave of liberalis- | ing fervour which also led ito reforms on hanging and I homosexuality, fell prey to abuse. Touts who met foreign i girls at airports and ! took them to selected clinics i were estimated to earn a . total of more than £2m a year. ■ Pregnant girls from overseas were asked to pay £3OO for a stay of only a few hours in a clinic for their abortion; another woman would be booked into the same bed later that day. ' The call to tighten up the law has come from the Parliamentary Committee on Abortion. which suggests' j that an approved fist of abor-, i tion agencies should be drawn up, and a scale of ! fees set by the Government ! for clinics.
