NEW FIRE GEAR AT GLENELG

(From Our Own Reporter) I WELLINGTON, Aug. 8. [ Fire safety at the Glenelg Health Camp, at St Martins, is to be improved by the installation of an automatic sprinkler system and some internal alterations, the Minister of Health (Mr McGuigan) announced today. The camp occupies a twostorey building believed to have been built about 1907. Up to 30 children are accommodated at a time, for periods of up to six weeks. “Health camps continue to prove their usefulness in helping children with physical and emotional difficulties,” the Minister said. “The building at Glenelg, despite its age. is still capable of being maintained for this use for some years.

“Fire protection at the camp, however, is not considered satisfactory by nresent standards and, in the interests of the children’s safety and that Of resident staff, extra precautions have been approved.” Fire partitions would be built around stairways and smoke-stop doors would be installed, said Mr McGuigan. About $33,580 would be spent on the improvements, most of it on the sprinkler system.

The money will come from the total already allocated for health camp works in the 1975-76 health vote, the Minister said.
