Large theft of crayfish tails

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 8

More than a ton of crayfish tails, worth about 810.000 on the New Zealand market was stolen from Te Anau some time within the last 10 days. The theft was discovered this morning when it was found that nlastic bags of tails were missing from two storage freezers, in a vard belonging to Northern Southland Transport, Holdings.

The thieves left 66 bags behind. Constable D. Wise’v, of Te Anau said that padlocks on the two freezers were broken. The freezers were last opened on July 30. Since then rough weather has kept most of the crayfish boats in port, and the freezers, normally cleared every few days, were left until today. Constable Wisely said that the frozen tails could not be allowed to thaw out, and they would probably be rebagged—in unmarked plastic bags—and frozen immediately again.

Such quantities had a very limited market if sold in bulk, Constable Wisely

said. They could possibly be sold through hotels.

The stolen tails were stored in freezers owned bv Nelson Fisheries, Ltd. It is not known if they were insured.
