Extra men help in Kaikoura clear-up
Kaikoura residents spent a fine, sunny week-end clearing up the great damage to property caused by Friday’s 120 m.p.h. gale.
: Master builders in Kaikoura met to assess the availability of supplies to cope with ‘repairs, and make arrangements to bring in extra workmen from Blenheim. I About 100 tarpaulins j arrived from Blenheim on Friday evening, on request from | the Kaikoura police, and were j quickly placed by volunteer ] labour on houses which had post roofing. i The police and the Civil i Defence organisation i patrolled business premises on Friday night to protect them from looting. Power was restored to part] of Kaikoura township at 3.15'
p.m. on Saturday. Since then, other parts of the township have been connected, although it will be some time before outlying areas have power restored. Extra staff from the Post Office engineering branch have been brought from Blenjheim, and are helping to restore telephone service to many subscribers in outlying districts. Tile Railways Department ;has also brought in extra men to help with the mammoth task of replacing telephone poles and signalling equipment. The gangs worked long hours to restore communications to enable train traffic to run late yesterday. ] Insurance assessors have arrived at Kaikoura to assess ‘claims registered with insur-
ance offices, but it will be some time before all claims can be processed.
