Work to restore pylons
About 65 men worked in the Sheffield area during the week-end in an effort to replace eight power pylons, which carry 600 megawatts, about onequarter of the North Island’s power. The pylons were blown over on Friday. The district operations engineer for the Electricity Department in Christchurch (Mr H. W. Millard) said that much of the time had been spent clearing away the damaged pylons. It was hoped to put up temporary pylons today. It was not yet known when — or where — permanent pylons would be erected. Mr Millard said access to the pylons was by a fairly muddy track. The new pylons were towed in pieces on sledges to the area, where they were assembled and lifted to their sites by a Royal New Zealand Air Force helicopter. Good weather was needed for the work, said Mr Millard, and the clear, light winds at the weekend had been ideal. Until the pylons are replaced the North Island will use more oil to generate power, and people there have been asked to save power.
