Speedsters

Sixty-five traffic offence notices. 39 of them for speeding, were issued to motorists using the Old West Coast Road. Highway 73 (the main road west) and Highway 72 (from Sheffield to Rakaia Gorge) yesterday. The chief traffic officer for the rural areas (Mr E. E. Dunlop) said last evening that the highest speed recorded was 82 m.p.h. He was unable to say what percentage of the motorists were skiers, but said that the traffic was not as heavy as expected because the Mount Hutt ski-field was closed This week-end, the number of speed detectors on the roads to the ski-fields was increased in an effort to bring the problem under control.
