Elmwood going south
The Elmwood Players will take two new directions with their spring production this year.
They will present a musical, “The Fantasticks,” the longest-running musical in the United States, and will also take it out of Christchurch for its initial season.
Award winner
“The Fantasticks,” winner of the Vernon Rice award for “outstanding contribution to Off-Broad-way theatre,” has been produced in Christchurch once before, in the mid1980s.
In May, 1973, it completed its 5478th performance in the Sullivan Street Playhouse, New York, well over 2000 per-
formances ahead of its nearest rival, “Fiddler on the Roof,” which had 3242 performances.
“The Fantasticks” has a small cast and a simple set There are a boy and a girl, and their fathers; and the set consists of a wooden platform, a wall, and a cardboard moon.
Brian Deavoll is the producer, and the musical director is Eric Cornwall. Auditions will be held at the Elmwood Playhouse on July 19, and rehearsals will begin soon afterwards.
Oamaru first
The show wil| go on the road to Oamara for its initial performances on September 19 and 20, and will return to Christchurch to open its main season on September 24.
