Checks on permits for firearms
(X.Z. Press Anocialtfin) WELLINGTON. Stricter policing of the Issue of permits for firearms will come into force today. The Commissioner of Police (Mr K. B. Bumside) said that. as from July I, people wishing to obtain firearms would be asked to complete a form which would enable the police more accurately to judge the applicant’s fitness to own or use firearms. "I am well aware of police and public concern about the ease with which some permits have been obtained,” Mr Bumside said. "The change being introduced will ensure that only fit and proper persons have legal access to firearms.”
Under the previous system, a brief declaration was completed on the back of the permit.
The new procedure, however. will require applicants to fill out a comprehensive form, including provision for the names of two persons, one of whom must be the next of kin, who are willing to verify the applicant’s fitness to own or u?e a firearm
