Widow loses home
(N.Z. Press Association)
BLENHEIM, June 30. A widow lost nearly all her possessions last night when fire destroyed her home in Pelorus Sound. Mrs Nina Andrews, aged 65, noticed a flicker of the lights in her 1000 sq. ft home at Nydia Bay about 8.45 p.m. and when she went out to the power generating room attached to the house to check, found a fire in it.
The generator was still working but she turned it off and ran 100 yards to the home of her brother, Mr Keith Wells, for help. In spite of efforts by the Wells household and the other settler in the bay, Mr Paul Huddleston, only the radio and television sets and some clothing were saved. The losses included a grand piano, motor-mower and chain-saw, as well as a full house of furniture and fittings. “The unfortunate part is that none of it was insured,” Mr Wells said. “My sister collected her pension only on Friday, and that was lost, too.”
