Warning of power cuts

Sir, — M. A. Ensor seems to misunderstand the purpose of storage-type water heating, for the element size has to be too small to heat the cylinder quickly. A large cylinder (60 or 100 gallons) not a minimum size one (40

gallons) avoids experiencing cold water and at the same time saves energy because the thermostat can be set lower. It thus reduces waste heat from standing pipes and from cylinder losses. Both are proportioned to temperature. Peak time controls are necessary to allow maximum use of power supply equipment to save the need to buy extra cables and transformers etc. — Yours, etc., M.I.E.E. June 30, 1975.
