Race and sport
Sir, — Again current events provide an example of the selective morality of those who purport to oppose racism. The Australian Government and English watchdogs on so-called racist tours have been quick to voice their opposition to a private cricket tour of South Africa by some Australians. As usual, the dire consequences have been threatened. Meanwhile the actions of probably the world’s No. 1 racist appear to be passing without protest. President Amin’s threat to execute two Britons unless Britain agrees to certain demands, is demonstrably unjust, irresponsible and racist. Who is protesting, apart from the British Government? Are a few games of cricket more terrible than tyrannical threats to human life? Do Dennis Hills and President Amin have to swap skin colours to gain the attention of those who say they want freedom and equal treatment for all? — Yours, etc., M. EDWARDS. June 18, 1975.
