Amalgamation of counties
Sir, — It amazes me that the Local Body Commission even considers the amalgamation of the Waipara and Ashley counties. It seems that they are still under the impression that the bigger the county, the better and more efficiently organised it is. It is a pity the Government officials, living in Wellington, many of whom have never lived in rural communities, are not content to leave things as they are. They and the county councils involved, should be more concerned with providing libraries and educational facilities. The outlying districts of both areas, would still remain virtually unaffected. The north half of the Waipara County, is much more involved with the Amuri and Cheviot counties. Perhaps the solution would be to split the Waipara county into three parts; the Amuri, Cheviot and Ashley counties, each incorporating part of it. — Yours, etc*, YOUNG LOCAL RESIDENT.
