Good rise in betting

Even with a drop in attendance due mainly to the Rugby at Lancaster Park, betting, both on and off-course, showed an increase at Ashburton on Saturday. Gates receipts dropped by some $3OO. On-course investments rose by $12,875 to $139,927. while the offcourse total of $235,696 was up by $14,877.50. Much of the Increase was attributable to the even field in the Sapling Stakes. On-course betting on this race rose to $29,965 compared with $10,576 when Noodlum stifled betting on the raee 12 months ago. Offcourse betting on the race was $32,000. compared with $14,034. The track on Saturday has probably never been bettered at a winter meeting. It carried a surprisingly good sole of grass.
