Data bank protests
(AZ. Press Association)
WANGANUI, June 1
An orderly street march and speeches today concluded a week-end of protest by the Progressive Youth Movement against, the Justice Department’s data bank computer centre in Wanganui.
About 40 demonstrators, from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, took part in the march and about 100 residents gathered outside the centre to hear several impromptu speeches.
All wearing stick-on numbers and carrying signs like “Fight creeping Fascism,” “Smash police. state computer,” and “Big Brother is watching,” the group gave the accompanying police guard no trouble. Speakers questioned, among other things, the j centre’s cost of about s23m at a time when other Government services were more urgently needed.
They also criticised “vague Government promises about safeguards to be built into the system.”
