Town win likely

Although Town has rested! five of its Canterbury A play-! ers from the annual Craw | Shield fixture against Country at Lancaster Park this! afternoon, it will still be! warmly favoured to win. | Country’s confidence was shattered by a 31-3 loss to Town last year, and this season’s side drawn from the sub-unions has yet to produce convincing form. It has a pack which excels at rucking and is competent in the set pieces, but it will need to take its chances better than it did last year if it is to get into the game. As well as resting Bill Bush, Lyn Davis, Ricky Allen, Terry Mitchell, and Vance Stewart, Town might be deprived of the services of the centre, Graham Sims, who is fighting to regain full fitness after injuring a leg in the Canterbury-Otago match. But the side has a mobile pack, which will be well led by Tane Norton, and a backline full of scoring potential with Brent Elder and Terry Mehrtens In the firing positions.

Alex Wyllie’s Country side has power at its command in the forwards, but it will look to Doug Bruce and Alan Fraser to give the backs the confidence they need to reverse the usual outcome of this popular fixture.
