Shop Assistants’ Union
: Sir, — Noting “M.C.H.’s letter,” may I point out another of Mr Tait’s misinterpretations. Here is a possible solution to the mysitery of the 1000 missing (shop workers who are not ! members of the union. Mr | Tait’s figures derive from a 1971 report. Since that time there has been “the introduction of ‘cash and wrap (bars,’ ‘sales centres.’ or I ‘check-out counters’,” to quote your Saturday article. (Even JVlr Tait must be aware 'of this; and although ‘stores . . . say it was not . . . that I they could reduce staff numbers," it is obvious that that !is the end result. This is ' readily apparent from even ' a cursory glance around the ' main Christchurch stores. I know of cases where one [sales assistant is now doing [work done two years ago by 1 four assistants. I hope this , affords Mr Tait some of the I satisfaction he says he •needs. — Yours, etc., MEMBER. ■ May 30, 1975.
