Fire at hotel
Fire broke out in the ceiling of the first floor of the Ramada Inn, Colombo Street, at 11.26 p.m. on Saturday. The fire spread to a storage room containing crockery, serviettes, and packing material, but was controlled bv the sprinkler system and staff who used an internal hose reel. When the alarm was given guests left the hotel, assembling in Victoria Square and the car park at the back of the hotel. Guests, perhaps remembering the film “Towering Inferno,” used the stairs rather than the lift, and the hotel was evacuated in seven minutes. Four appliances from the Central Fire Station attended the fire which caused minor damage to the storage room.
