UNDER-20 FENCING

Stephen Clarke (OtagoSouthland) won all three male titles at the inaugural New Zealand under-20 fencing championships in Wellington on the week-end. In a tournament marked bv a very high standard. Clarke was I the outstanding competitor, I although he was pressed by a ; Canterbury competitor. Stephen I lillman. second in both the : epee and sabre and third in the foil. Linda Harris (Canterbury) won the only women’s event, the foil but was not available for the under-20 tournament team which competed against the Wellington provincial team at the end of. the championships. In that match, the under-20 team of Clarke. Tillman, Andrew Coker (Wellington), and Brian Flusky (Auckland) won the foil, and Clarke and Tillman were joined by Alex Greenland and Martin Brill (Canterbury) in winning the epee. The foil team also competed in the sabre but was beaten bv the senior combination, and the touranment women’s team was also beaten in the foil. That team included one Canterbury girl. Jane Lindsay. Results of the championship events were:— Men.—Foil: Clarke 1, Flusky 2, Tillman 3. Epee: Clarke 1, Tillman 2. Brill 3. Sabre: Clarke 1, Tillman 2, Coker 3, Women’s foil.—Harris 1, S. Buckingham (Otago-Southland) 2. Lindsay 3.
