Jackpot betting unlikely yet
| 1N.3. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Despite recent assur-i j ances to the contrary, i New Zealand punters may have to wait a long while for the re--introduction of .jackpot betting. The reason is that the| New Zealand Racing Author-, i ity has given a flat “no” to proposals offered by the I Racing and Trotting Conferences. The Racing Conference chairman (Mr A. M. Hughes) ! has just received a ' letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr May) advising him of the authority’s | attitude. •UNANIMOUS’ The Minister said he had ; been advised that the authority was unanimous in i the view that the introduction of jackpot betting Jshould not be approved. Mr G. Callam, chairman of the Racing Authority, said j in Auckland that the ’authority had not been as dogmatic about jackpots as it might appear. “We are not against jackpots as a betting medium at ! all; we simply did not like , | the proposals offered by the Racing and Trotting Confer-' lienees,” he said. TICKETS i; The authority was not; prepared to approve any, i form of jackpot betting,! 11 unless the sale of tickets : was handled by totalisatorl ' i machinery, i! “We want to tighten up. ion the method of issuing! j tickets and would like to see jackpots conducted on sim-l ilar lines to the treble or quadrella betting in Austra-i lia,” Mr Callam said. The quadrella was the' most popular method of betting in Melbourne, and punters could buy their tickets through computerised offcourse T.A.B. agencies or from the on-course T.A.B. agencies.
