Access “worth $50,000”
Better public access to Paradise Bay, adjoining Hay’s Bay, was sought by Mr R. C. Mitchell at the Mount Herbert County Council’s townplanning hearings yesterday. He asked the council to amend its planning scheme to declare two lots a recreation reserve. This, he said, would give better access to the beach, one of the few sandy ones round Lyttelton Harbour, and create a picnic sp.ot.
Mr Mitchell estimated that the land was worth $50,000, and said the Lands and Survey Department had money to help with its purchase, and that the council, with amalgamation in the offing, would have access to greater resources. The land was worth more than $50,000 as a public asset. Mr Mitchell said he was not a land-owner in the county, but had a general interest in securing public access to desirable spots.
