$200,000 in new cables
Three new main underground power lines to feed substations will be laid by the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board at a cost of about $200,000.
j The board’s chief engineei | (Mr P. D. Rutledge) said that there were no more access routes to the Islington substation for overhead lines and new .ones would have tc be underground. Two of the lines, those tc Sockburn and Shands Road, should be oil-filled cables and the new one to Harewood could be solid cable, said Mr Rutledge. The oil-filled cable cost more, but it could stand higher overloading without damage. The British suppliers 6f the oil-filled cable had quoted a price of $28,000 for installing, joining and supervising the work. This would in-
ir volve a supervising engineer lt at $9O a day, an oil engineer and a jointer, all flown out is from Britain, said Mr Ruto ledge. However much of this cost o might be saved by using the 1, board’s own staff in collabod ration with M.E.D. staff. With d this in mind the whole pror ject had been estimated to e cost $200,000. This sum had d been allowed in the capital it works estimates for the next two years. e Mr Rutledge said it would a be a year before the cable - was delivered and probably g 18 months before some of the - accessories would arrive.
