t.\ Z.P.A Beu ter— Op vri ffh t) PARIS, April 14. Any woman with a single superfluous pound would look like the circus fat lady in the new clothes from Paris. That was the message ironi the French ready-to-wear collections for the European autumn-winter season.
Karl Lagefeld, considered by many to be the most influential ready-to-wear creator in Paris, evolves layering and multiple co-ordinates in arrow-slim silhouettes »hat cling to the body like a wet bathing costume. The latest clothes collection is in direct contrast to the last two, which presented endless yards of swirling fabrics.
The heavy winter coat is finished, Lagerfeld believes. The German-born designer who formerly created the Jean Patou couture collections, thinks that three or four layers of clothing — sweaters, tunics, jackets, scarves and shawls — are warmer than one topcoat.
Tube-slim skirts fal below the knees or just to the top of the calves. They are teamed with dark-toned, heavy woollen stockings and flat-heeled moccasins or lace-up shoes.
There are masses of new trousers which are worn with tunics. Ihe trousers have slim, pipe stem legs gathered in around the ankles like harem pants, and are accompanied by high-heeled hoots.
Several models found the clothes difficult to handle. One girl ended up with a bare backside on the walkway. Another mannequin’s sari scarf slipped off her shoulder to reveal a bare bosom.
