SMITHFIELD MARKET
Prices mainly
unchanged
Reduced demand at retail level, because of higher prices, was reflected at wholesale — where a quiet trade prevailed on Smithfield market throughout last week, the Meat Board reports. Pitchings of fresh beef and lamb were lower, enabling daily clearance to be made at values similar to the previous week. New Zealand lamb was available in greater .quantities than the previous week, and, although realisations remained unchanged, the return to normal work at the London docks, coupled with a seasonal increase in arrivals, created some uncertainty as to whether present prices would be maintained during the next two or three weeks.
There were fewer cartons of New Zealand lamb cuts on offer than of late, but values were maintained on a steady demand.
