The Prime Minister of Singapore (Mr Lee Kuan Yew) has shown interest in the theory that the Maoris and Polynesians originated in South-East Asia. Skellerup). ; Dr Duff said later. “He cross-examined me as) shrewdly as a lawyer. But yvej yvere able to show him that: Polynesian stone adzes could) be traced back to the South China coast in the region between the Yangtse and Pearl rivers.”

Mr Lee also showed curiosity about the status of the Heyerdal view of the influence from South America on the Polynesians. In keeping with his holiday mood the Prime Minister turned up at the museum yvearing a polo neck jersey and casual clothes. Perhaps that’ yvas in readiness for later in the day when he played a round on the Russley) Golf Course. Early last night Mr Lee) i and his party entertained 1 about 50 invited guests to a ) cocktail party at his Christchurch hotel. Mr Lee and his party will leave Christchurch by air this morning for a weekend in the Mount CookQueenstown region.
