The Severed Hand
Sir, — We are shortly re-1 publishing a book entitled! “The Severed Hand or The’ Howard Mystery.” This was; first published in 1886 after! a sensational case of con-! spiracy conducted in the Christchurch Magistrates • Court. The facts of the case! were briefly as follows —[ Arthur Robert Rannage Howard feigned drowning at! Sumner after heavily insurling himself, three weeks later a hand claimed to be’ Howard’s and severed by a‘ shark (but later found to be; a woman’s severed by a; saw) was found at Taylor’s Mistake. A few weeks later Howard was arrested in! Wellington after a brief residence in the Wairarapa. Wei would be interested in hear-1 ing from any reader who might be able to shed light,! on rhe origin of the hand —’ many bodies were exhumed: before the trial in the' Wairarapa, Wellington and! at Sunnyside Hospital with-; out success. — Yours, etc., I GARY NICOL.
