New league seeks games
The newly-formed Marlborough Rugby League has approached Canterbury, which has been assisting the development of the code in that area, to arrange a series of fixtures between club sides from both provinces throughout the season.
Mr D G. Gaynor, secretary-manager of the Canterbury league, said yesterday that a Marlborough team ’would play at Kaiapoi on Sunday. It was hoped that matches will be held between the clubs drawing the bye in the Marlborough competition and the Canterbury senior first division.
Marlborough is also expected to make its entry into junior representative football by taking part in the Southern Zone 17-years quad-
rangular tournament, at Greymouth on June 21 and 22.
Ice hockey.—The Soviet Union beat Czechoslovakia, 5-2, in Munich to take a clear lead in the world ice hockey championships. Sweden defeated Finland, 1-0. for second place in the table.
Cricket.—Henry Sampson, the Kaikorai and Otago, left-hand batsman, is the Dunedin cricketer of the year. The award was made for points scored for batting, bowling, and fielding during last season. The runner-up was Bryan Andrews, of the same club. Glenn Turner (Green Island) was third. Sampson scored 1389 at an average of 48. He was second in the New Zealand averages.
