'Sevens' ruled out

The Christchurch Marist Rugby Club’s hopes of holding a national sponsored seven-a-side tournament at Queen Elizabeth II Park next month have been dashed. The New Zealand union has refused to allow the contest to take place. The reasons for the decision have not been disclosed. The Canterbury union has yet to receive correspondence from the national body on the matter.

The president of the Marist club (Mr D. Hughes) said that the decision was a blow to the club’s bid to build' clubrooms. He estimated that the tournament would have brought in $5OOO towards the project.

Marist had hired .a Christchurch sports promoter, Mr K. Ryall, to organise the tournament, which was to be held on May 11. Top club sides from several parts of the country were to be invited to play for prizes, which included $lOOO worth of Rugby equipment for the winner.

Mr Hughes said he underi stood there were six reasons (given by the national body for turning down the application. Marist would study these before making a fresh bid through the Canterbury i union for permission to hold the tournament next year.
