Revised Avon bridges plan
Revised road plans for the Bridge of Remembrance area have been approved by the Christchurch City Council’s works and traffic committee.
They still allow tor the Bridge of Remembrance to be reserved for pedestrians, and for a new bridge over the Avon River nearby to continue Cambridge Terrace in a curve to the intersection of Lichfield Street and Durham Street.
Oxford Terrace, between! the Bridge of Remembrance and Lichfield Street, will be stopped. A report before the committee yesterday said that Durham Street between Cashel and Lichfield Street would remain open to southbound buses and taxis only. When the Cashel Street pedestrian mail opened,' traffic leaving the parking!
and service area ar the west end of the mall would have to turn north, and access to the parking service area would be from Oxford Terrace only. For north-bound traffic, Durham Street would be open to all vehicles Surveys showed that up to 35 per cent of Lichfield Street traffic wished to turn left into Durham street, and access to the new A.M.P. car-park must also be considered, hence the retention of movement for al! traffic on this part of the road.
The new scheme would also disrupt bus routes less than the original plans, the report said.
