Air surveys of hill suburbs suggested
Aerial contour surveys of the city’s hillside suburbs, to help deal with drainage problems, should be considered in the Christchurch City Council’s next estimates, the council’s works and traffic committee decided yesterday.
A report from the engineer’s department said that recent storms had highlighted stormwater problems in the hillside suburbs, particularly in the valley between Mount Pleasant Road and Soleares Avenue.
Although the council did not have direct responsibility for the provision of drainage, it had flower, when approving subdivisions, to require drainage to be provided, the report said. The problems had been discussed at a panel discusion in the Mount Pleasant Community Centre on March 11.
That meeting had resolved to ask the council, the Drainage Board, the Catchment Board, and other bodies to bring down combined proposals for improving water courses. It also sought a reduction in the amount of water entering courses in the area, and altered loading of drains.
The council had asked the Drainage Board for a meeting of officers on the question. the report said. The most obvious job the council could do to help with-
out usurping the board’s responsibility was the preparation of contour plans for all hillside catchments within the city boundaries.
