Champion by default?
(A Z FA Reuter —Copyright) BELGRADE. The Soviet challenger, Anatoly Karpov, will become world chess champion by default if the title-holder. Bobby Fischer, does not tell the International Chess Federation by April 1 that he is willing to meet Karpov, according to the federation president (Dr Max Euwe). Dr Euwe told Svetozar Gligoric, a Yugoslav grandmaster, in an interview published in the semi-official "Borba” newspaper that he had unofficial information that Fischer would not take part in the match due to be played in Manila in October. “If Fischer does not want to play , we have to proclaim Karpov the world champion Of course Karpov does not like this, neither does the Soviet Chess Federation, but there is no other way,” he said An extraordinary federation congress in the Netherlands last week turned down Fischer’s demand that the challenger must win by a 10-8 margin, but accepted his proposal that the match would be timeless, dropping the 36-game limit laid down last year. The congress also agreed to a Soviet proposal tc delay the title match this year from June to October.
