THIRD KAKAPO CAPTURED

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. S' A third kakapo has been captured in Fiordland, but jl this is the only one that has been transferred to [•- Maud Island, in the Marl- ; ~ borough Sounds. The other two, both males, were released. The bird, also a male, vias captured near Milford Sound, and transferred by hcjlieopter and light aircraft to Nelson on Monday nij.thfi. It) was ferried across to Maim I Island by helicopter, and jspent Monday night in an afiiary, before being released on Tuesday. Twp other kakapo were taken .to Maud Island some

time ago, and are now thriving. The project was planned by the Internal Affairs Department, which spent some time studying five kakapos in Fiordland last year. It is believed that one of the three birds now on Maud Island may be a female, but breeding attempts have been unsuccessful. The idea of sending another male kakapo to the island is to create a “love triangle,” in the hone that the female bird can be induced to mate. Most of the Wildlife Branch staff have now left Fiordland, but another expedition is planned for October. ? I
