Indian state govt resigns

The Chief Minister of Nagaland state in north-east India (Mr Vizol) has resigned with his government, alleging that the Opposition kidnapped five of his party’s! state legislators, the Press Trust of India reported. Defections had reduced I the state-government of Mr I Vizol to a minority in the 160-member Assembly. He came to power in February last year, leading a United Democratic Front which had strong links with Naga rebels, who have been fighting for independence from India.
The underground remained just as active and no progress was made towards a negotiated settlement.
Mr Vizol Issued a state-! ment in Kohima, the Naga-j land capital, saying that the state had been “plunged into a political crisis as a result of the kidnapping of five honourable members of the state Assembly belonging to my party by the Opposition with the help of security forces a week ago.” In addition, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly had been taken from their offices to the house of the Opposition leader, Mr Vizol said.
