Broadway unbeaten
('’The Press” Spertal *ierrice> , DUNEDIN. Broadway, of Wellington. remained the only unbeaten team aftet the second day of the national women’s interclub softball tournament in Dunedin. Its former co-leader, Saints (Hutt Valley), was surprisingly upset by Royals, of Nelson. Trailing Broadway (four wins) are Metro (Auckland),' and Saints (three each). Monowai. Christchurch (two). Royals (two). Ellis Park. Dunedin (two), Huia, Manawatu. (one). Nganuma. Midlands (one). Monowai again had a day of mixed results. It was beaten. 6-0. by Metro — a score (hat was hardly any indication of the actual match — before having an 11-6 win over Huia. The outstanding fielding of Metro kept Monowai restrained in the first game. Barbara Turbott and Zalerie Keenan batted safely for Monowai. but many other finely-hit drives were turned into catches by the alert Metro fielders. A triple by Sue Jacobs brough* in Joyce Jones to open Metro’s account in the first innings, and two runs were added in the fifth when Barbara Wines and Barbara Johnson scored. A home run bv Clara Bowman at Metro’s next turn at bat doubled the total and put Monowai too far behind to have any chance of making up the deficit. It was the Christchurch

Rangi Collier, ■ Natalie Hazelwood, Joy - Thompson and Heather Tan- ■ ner combined to produce three runs in the third innings, and Huia regained r the lead when a home run by Thompson also scored ’ | Valerie Allan. Monowai had the better of /the closing stages. In its last J two innings it went through 5 its batting order to reach 11 runs and Huia in reply could ,■ only bring home Allan at its! . final attempt.
