Escapers still free

Two of the five Waikeria escapers who allegedly yesterday assaulted and robbed a man at Huntly were still free today—one of them possibly in the Whatawhata area.
The five youths escaped from a work party near Kawhia shortly after mid-day yesterday and drove to Huntly.
Armed with a slasher and a length of steel pipe, the youths allegedly assaulted a commercial traveller from Auckland who was sitting in his car in River Road, four miles from Huntly, eating his lunch. The traveller, Mr R. E.| Penrose, aged 41, of Huapai.i was beaten on the back with the pipe and robbed of his, wallet, containing about $B/ his watch and car.
The youths allegedly made off with the car and shortly before midnight three were arrested by police in Whangarei. The other two are believed to have been dropped at Whatawhata and Auckland. but the police were still checking on this today.
Soccer stir quits. — Mike England. one of the big names of British soccer, has resigned from the sport. England, aged 33. had played 43 matches for Wales and 300 matches for Tottenham Hotspurs.
