ANTI-NOISE CAMPAIGN
55 “tickets” issued Fifty-five traffic-offence notices were issued to drivers of noisy vehicles in the first week of the Ministry of I T ransport’s Christchurch' campaign against vehicle noise, according to the Minis-. try’s city division chief traffic' officer (Mr I. W. McLauch-' fan) yesterday. The campaign will continue for the next two months.
Many of the offences concerned the way vehicles were driven rather than the state of the vehicles, although one car had been ordered off the road. Mr McLauchlan said. The incidents included drivers who deliberately screeched their tyres by doing “racing starts.” and who deliberately drove at high speeds in low gears in order to make as much noise as they could.
Publicity at the start of the campaign had led to many people telephoning the Ministry to report deliberately noisy driving.
