Car-tyre prices up sharply
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 26. The price of car tyres has risen 11 per cent and some truck tyres are up 18 per cent.
The latest approved price increase is the fourth in just over a year.
It means that a car tyre that in January last year cost just over $2O now costs just under $4O — a rise of almost $lOO on a set of five tyres for a car. The latest increase pushed up the price of a tyre for a middle-weight, six-cylinder ]from about $34 to $3B. I The increases apply to rei treads as well as to new tyres.
The president of the Auckland Road Carriers’ Association (Mr J. Stuart)
said that tyre costs could amount to 5c a running mile on trucks—thus an 18 per
cent increase would add 1c a mile to the running costs of the truck. The rise would have to he covered by increased freight rates, he said. The carriers’ national association has already japplied for a 4 per cent increase in freight rates to (cover yesterday’s fuel price | rise. As well, it is collating >a dossier of other increases —such as tyres, spare parts
and wages — to support 'further freight rate increases.
